Above Knee (AK) - Transfemoral

Knees are the biggest addition to this level of amputation along with specific body connection designs to allow for maximum control of your prosthesis.  

From knees that lock in place all to microprocessor knees that help to control your knee at every point of you walking. The experienced and qualified prosthetist will help to determine the knee and foot appropriate to return you to the highest level of activity.

The goal is to return the individual to the daily activities performed and enjoyed prior to the amputation.

Important considerations at the level

• Foot design
• Knee functioning
• Socket design (connection to the body)

Below Knee (BK) - Transtibial

At this level of amputation the patient will benefit from the technology both in the way the prosthesis is connected and interacts with the body and in the technological advancement of feet. Here at Boston O&P, we have experienced and qualified prosthetists to help design and fabricate the best prosthesis for you.

The goal is to return the individual to the daily activities performed and enjoyed prior to the amputation.  

Important considerations at the level   

• Feet
• Socket design

Upper Extremity (UE) - Transradial, Transhumeral

With this level of amputation it is important to return the individual to bi-manual control of the upper extremities. This means allowing an individual to use both arms for the daily activities.

The goal is to return a individual to the daily activities performed and enjoyed prior to the amputation.  

Important considerations at this level

• Hand/hook design
• Body powered (muscle movement control the prosthesis)
• Myo-electric (muscle signal and electronics control the prosthesis.

Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD) - Rotationplasty

These prostheses are a specialty style prosthesis that require inclusion of the foot in the structure of the prosthesis to accommodate the unique structure associated with having an intact ankle to control the prosthesis. The foot is the structure that is attached to the prosthesis.     

In the case of the Rotationplasty prosthesis, the prosthesis will also include an external knee joint to help support the remaining ankle structure that will now be used for the patient's knee during ambulation. The natural ankle will work along with the prosthetic knee joint to control the prosthesis.  

The goal is to return a individual to the daily activities performed and enjoyed prior to the amputation.

• Socket design (connection to the body)-unique structure to accommodate rotated femur or foot that is remaining
