Overview of Lower Limb Orthoses

Lower limb orthoses are braces used to treat defects and abnormalities of the hip, femur, knee, tibia, ankle, hindfoot, forefoot, and toes. In children, lower limb conditions can include congenital abnormalities as well as conditions that develop throughout growth. Conditions that may require treatment with lower limb orthoses include:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Spina bifida
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Trauma or injury
  • Pediatric stroke

Lower limb issues can often be improved or corrected with the use of orthoses such as those manufactured by Boston O&P. Lower limb orthoses can be used to:

  • Provide support to the limb
  • Improve alignment
  • Control motion
  • Limit or reduce pain
  • Correct deformities
  • Prevent the progression of deformities
